Five signs your business has outgrown ad-hoc IT support

Calling someone only when things break works for a while. These five signs suggest it is time for managed IT support.

Published 20 October 2026 by MNB Computing

Many small businesses start with informal IT help: a friend who knows computers, or a call to someone when something breaks. It works for a while. But as the team grows and the business relies more on its systems, the cost of an unexpected problem grows too.

1. You only find out about problems when they stop you working

If the first sign of trouble is a server that is down or an inbox that will not open, you are always reacting. Managed IT services use a central platform that alerts the support team when issues arise, so many problems are spotted early.

2. Updates and antivirus are patchy

When updates and protection are managed machine by machine, some devices inevitably fall behind. Centrally managed antivirus and automatic updates keep everyone on the same footing without anyone having to remember.

3. Nobody is sure what is backed up

If you could not say with confidence where your files are copied to, you are relying on luck. Automatic online backup copies your files off-site, so a failed drive does not mean lost work.

4. Email and software are a patchwork

A mixture of personal email accounts and unmanaged software makes it hard to keep things organised and secure. Moving to Microsoft 365 with Exchange business email gives the whole team one consistent set of tools. See our Microsoft 365 support.

5. One person holds all the knowledge

If only one person knows how the network, passwords and equipment are set up, the business is exposed when they are unavailable. A support contract puts that knowledge in the hands of a team.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small files that a website stores on your device. Similar technologies, such as your browser’s local storage, work in the same way. They can make a site work properly, remember your choices, or share information with other companies.

How we use them

This website uses analytics cookies only if you choose “Accept all”. It does not use advertising cookies. We only use the following, and we only use non-essential ones if you choose “Accept all”.

Your choices

When you first visit, you can choose “Accept all” or “Essential only”. Essential only means the Google map, Google Analytics and their cookies are not loaded. The contact form’s spam check from Cloudflare is necessary for the form to work, so it is not affected by this choice. You can change your mind at any time using “Cookie settings” in the footer of this website. You can also delete cookies and stored site data in your browser settings. If you have already accepted, deleting them removes anything stored so far.

Other websites

Our site links to other websites, such as our remote support service. They have their own cookie and privacy policies, which we don’t control.

Your information

This policy covers cookies only. If you send us a message through the contact form, we use your details to reply to your enquiry. We also keep a record of the enquiry, the emails we send in response and your IP address for up to 7 days, so that we have a record of our correspondence and can protect the form from abuse. To protect the form from spam, Cloudflare Turnstile checks each submission as described above.
