How to tell if your hard drive is failing
Clicking noises, freezes and disappearing files can all be warning signs. Here is what to look for and what to do next.

Hard drives and solid-state drives do not last forever, and they do not always fail suddenly. Knowing the warning signs gives you a chance to protect your files before it is too late.
Common signs of a failing drive
- Clicking, grinding or whirring noises from a traditional hard drive
- Your computer freezing, crashing or taking a long time to start
- Files that will not open, or that have gone missing
- Error messages about the drive, or blue screens
- The drive not being detected at all
What to do straight away
- Back up your important files immediately, if the computer still works
- Avoid running repair tools that write to a drive you suspect is failing
- Switch the computer off if it is making unusual noises
- Get advice before attempting anything else
If you cannot get to your files
If the drive has already failed or the computer will not start, the files are often still on the drive. Our data recovery service in Hull can help you get them back, although nobody can guarantee a result until the device has been assessed.
Make backups a habit
The simplest protection is automatic online backup, which copies your files off-site without you having to think about it. We can set it up for you. See our IT support services or call 01482 646606.
