What happens to your data when you recycle a computer?
Deleting files does not remove your data. Here is how secure erasure works and why it matters before you recycle an old computer.

An old laptop or office PC may be heading for recycling, but the information on it is very much alive. Emails, documents, saved passwords, customer records and photos can all stay on a drive long after the machine has stopped being useful to you.
Why deleting files is not enough
When you delete a file or format a drive, the computer usually just marks the space as available. The data itself can remain until something overwrites it, and it can often be recovered with the right tools. That is why simply emptying the recycle bin before handing a machine over is not a safe way to protect your information.
What secure data erasure does
Certified erasure software overwrites the data on a drive so that it cannot be recovered. At MNB Computing we use Certus, which holds NCSC and ADISA certification and supports the UK government’s HMG IS5 Baseline and Enhanced methods. You can read more about the process on our secure data destruction page.
Why it matters for businesses
Under UK GDPR, businesses are responsible for the personal data they hold, and that includes data on equipment they have retired. Securely erasing drives before equipment is reused or recycled is a sensible step in showing that you have taken that responsibility seriously.
Erase first, then recycle
The safest order is to erase first and recycle second. We can securely erase your data and then recycle old PCs, laptops and servers responsibly. Find out more about computer recycling in Hull, or call us on 01482 646606.
